A safety and health plan is only as good as the communication and training that must take place throughout the university to bring the plan into reality.

  • All university community members must be kept aware and up to date on all safety-related policies, procedures, and training.
  • Employees want to know how well they and their departments are doing in terms of safety. Supervisors must communicate statistics to his/her employees at the monthly safety meetings. Discussions about accidents that took place the previous month should take place, as well as discussions about “near misses.”
  • Supervisors must conduct monthly safety meetings with employees. Meetings are a way of providing training, updating, and safety discussions, and of pointing out possible habits.
  • All employees should be encouraged to bring to the university’s attention any potential health and or safety hazard that may exist in the workplace or on the university grounds during the daily work schedule.
