Prepare an etude or solo for each of the following:

  1. Snare Drum – concert required; rudimental optional
  2. Keyboard Percussion (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone) – two mallets required; four mallets optional
  3. Timpani – demonstrate fundamental skills (tuning, rolls, interval playing) on two to four drums
  4. Optional: drumset styles

Expect sight reading on snare and keyboard percussion.

Music Performance, BFA

Prepare an etude or solo for each of the following:

  1. Snare Drum – concert and rudimental

  3. Timpani – demonstrate fundamental skills (tuning, rolls, interval playing) on four drums
  4. Drumset – demonstration of various styles

Expect sight reading on snare, keyboard percussion, and timpani.

If you have specific pieces, etudes, or books in mind, you are welcome to contact the Director of Percussion, Chad Heiny (cheiny@iup.edu), to confirm that your selections are appropriate and competitive.

If you do not have a private percussion teacher, recommended materials include:

  • Intermediate Snare Drum Studies by Mitchell Peters
  • Chemical Songs Vol. I or II by Chad Heiny
  • Fundamental Method for Timpani by Mitchell Peters
  • Soundscapes by Kyle H. Peters

Please bring your own sticks, mallets, and music. Instruments will be provided, though some students choose to bring their own snare drum.

Scholarship Information

To be considered for percussion scholarship awards, you must audition by February 14.

Percussion auditions may also be scheduled outside of Department Audition Days by appointment. Please reach out to Professor Heiny with ample notice to arrange a personal audition.
